The merger creates a profitable market leader in one of the biggest food delivery markets worldwide
Berlin, 9th August 2016: Global online food delivery company foodpanda today announces the merger of its hellofood business with Hungerstation in Saudi Arabia, to comfort their clear market leader position.
foodpanda entered the Middle East in March 2013 under its hellofood-brand. Further, the company operates the food delivery businesses 24h.ae in the United Arab Emirates and Otlob.com in Egypt. The Saudi entrepreneur Ebrahim Al-Jassim founded Hungerstation in March 2012 in Dammam, as one of the first online food ordering portals in the region. Today, the service is available in over 30 cities across Saudi Arabia.
Both brands will continue to operate in the Kingdom to cater to all segments of the Saudi population and offer the largest variety of restaurants. The combined business has over 3 Million app installs, over 1 Million active users and an inventory of over 2,000 restaurants across the country. As a result of the deal foodpanda’s Middle East business turns profitable and becomes the second foodpanda region to reach profitability after Central Eastern Europe which turned profitable earlier this year.
In Saudi Arabia, the existing teams will be led by Ebrahim Al-Jassim, together with Mehdi Oudghiri and Anass Boumediene, Managing Directors of foodpanda Middle East who will oversee the operations in the region.
Ralf Wenzel, Co-Founder and CEO of foodpanda group: “Along with our other businesses in the Middle East, Hungerstation and hellofood consolidate our market leadership in the region and we are proud to have achieved overall profitability just three years after launch. Together with Ebrahim, we will have an extremely experienced local team on the ground, which understands the market, built strong relationships with restaurants and continuously strive to bring the most convenient food delivery experience to our customers.”
Ebrahim Al-Jassim, Founder and CEO of HungerStation: “We have worked very hard during the last years, developing strategic alliances with the main players in the food industry and building trust among our customers. That together with our working ethics and culture, helped us to become the leader of online food delivery in Saudi Arabia. With the experience, resources and technology of foodpanda, we are very excited and ready to take the next big step in order to provide a world class service to Saudi consumers.”
